Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between supervisor and coworkers’
workplace incivility and newcomer proactive behaviors. Drawing on conservation of resources (COR) theory,
the authors examined resource depletion as a mediator and newcomer proactive personality, as well as their
current organizational tenure as moderators of the relationship between workplace incivility toward
newcomers and their proactive behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach – A time-lagged research design was used to test hypotheses with data
covering 322 newcomers and their immediate supervisors in two subsidiaries of a large food processing
company in China. Regression analysis using the PROCESS macro in SPSS is used to test the hypotheses.
Findings – The results show that workplace incivility toward newcomers is negatively related to their
proactive behaviors. This relationship is mediated by resource depletion. Furthermore, newcomers’ proactive
personality moderates the relationship between workplace incivility and resource depletion. Moreover, both the
direct effect of workplace incivility on resource depletion and its indirect effect on newcomer proactive behaviors
aremoderated by the combination of newcomer proactive personality and their current organizational tenure.
Originality/value – Drawing on COR theory, a theoretical framework is constructed that specifies the
process through which workplace incivility affects proactive behaviors to expand collective understandings
of workplace incivility in the newcomer context. Furthermore, the boundary conditions of the underlying
process are investigated, which further enhances the contribution of this paper to the extant literature on
workplace incivility.

Abstract
Purpose – Twenty-first century crises reaffirm the need of faster mobilization of resources during crises.
Without interorganizational collaboration and resource mobilization, organizing efficient response is not
possible. Resource mobilization is an essential aspect of response. It ensures a faster and better response.
Collaboration between teams of emergency responders may include commonly known boundary spanning
activities such as resource sharing, information sharing and communication. The purpose of this paper is to
contribute our knowledge of how to organize a better crisis response through collaboration. More precisely,
what strategies work as drivers for emergency responder teams during collaboration in crisis scenarios.
Design/methodology/approach – Through design of experiments, using tabletop exercises and online
surveys, this study investigates the drivers of collaboration during a crisis scenario. Participants of this study
are decision makers and emergency responders from various public actors in crisis management from Sweden.
Findings – Collaboration is essential to manage cross-functional services in normal times, as well as meet the
growing needs during crises. In absence of collaboration, boundary spanning activities such as sharing
resources or information to provide any kind of service will not be possible. For teams to survive in fastchanging
environment, they must be able to adapt to the changing demands accordingly. This paper
demonstrates which factors are drivers for emergency responders to mobilize resources, especially during
crises. It captures the tension between individual and collective goals in crisis response and highlights the
drivers that affect decision-making during crises.
Originality/value – The novelty of the paper lies in its methodology using tabletop exercises, design of
experiments as part of Six Sigma toolbox and online surveys in combination with weightage of agreements and
disagreements and free text answers. Although scientific research so far has demonstrated the need for
collaboration during crises, however, which factors act as drivers for emergency responders to collaborate, is
lacking scientific evidence. Incentives for collaboration have not been studied enough. These can tell us which
strategies can improve collaboration during crises. This research paper is a scientific contribution in that
direction.

Purpose – Using two main research questions, the purpose of this paper is to examine well-being and
preparedness among Cambodian and Laotian immigrants living near the Gulf Coast of the USA, and the ways
in which indicators such as sense of community and risk perception are related to these constructs.
Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a cross-sectional prospective design to examine
disaster preparedness and well-being among Laotian and Cambodian immigrant communities. Quantitative
survey data using purposive snowball sampling were collected throughout several months in Alabama,
Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana.
Findings – Results from two multiple regressions revealed that sense of community and age contributed to
well-being and were significant in the model, but with a negative relationship between age and well-being.
Risk perception, confidence in government, confidence in engaging household preparedness and ability to
cope with a financial crisis were significant predictors and positively related to disaster preparedness.
Practical implications – Well-being and disaster preparedness can be bolstered through community-based
planning that seeks to address urgent needs of the people residing in vulnerable coastal locations.
Specifically, immigrants who speak English as a second language, elder individuals and households in the
lowest income brackets should be supported in disaster planning and outreach.
Originality/value – Cambodian and Laotian American immigrants rely upon the Gulf Coast’s waters for
fishing, crab and shrimp income. Despite on-going hazard and disasters, few studies address preparedness
among immigrant populations in the USA. This study fills a gap in preparedness research as well as factors
associated with well-being, an important aspect of long-term resilience.

Abstract
Purpose – Migrants play an essential role in economic and societal outcomes of the host society, both as
members of the workforce and as citizens. However, integration and finding employment after migration
remain critical issues. The purpose of this paper is to employ an evidence-based quantitative approach to
identify migrant workers’ most important qualifications from an employer perspective and to explore factors
that influence employer perception of migrants.
Design/methodology/approach – This study uses European Social Survey data that contain responses
from managers in European countries in 2014 (n¼2,828) and 2016 (n¼3,014). Confirmatory factor analysis
and structural equation modelling are used to analyse the data.
Findings – For managers, migrants’ commitment to the host country’s way of life is more important than their
job skills, educational level and language proficiency. The effects of managers’ individual characteristics,
including demographics, expectancies and personal values, on their general attitude towards migrants are
also quantified.
Practical implications – The study’s outcomes can assist migrants to develop the qualifications most
valued by employers, and allow policymakers to integrate the organizational perspective into policies and
initiatives for integration of migrant labour.
Originality/value – Through HR practices, organizations significantly affect migrants’ career outcomes.
Yet research on migrant workers from an organizational and managerial perspective is limited. This study
identifies migrant workers’ most important qualifications from an employer perspective. It also explores
which individual characteristics most influence organizational decision-makers’ perception. Utilizing a crosscultural
and longitudinal data set provides a unique opportunity to generate generalizable findings.

Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual overview of the research pertaining to these themes and an
analysis of the special issues papers’ contributions to these themes.
Findings – Four themes that represent important but relatively neglected lines of inquiry into sex-based
harassment are identified. These are (1) the psychology of harassment, (2) organizational culture and networks,
(3) the invisible majority and (4) the importance of collective action.
Originality/value – The paper offers an expert perspective on the state of research related to sex-based
harassment and four themes that are important to moving it forward.

and attempts to explore the way private labor market mediators involved in the integration of immigrants
contribute to reproducing cultural stereotypes reminiscent of colonial ideas.
Design/methodology/approach – Findings are based on respondent-driven interviews with nine labor
market mediators (seven women and three men) from eight private labor market agencies in Sweden.
Findings – The findings showed that the private labor market mediators put their trust in the neoliberal
system and rely on the colonial discourses when convincing immigrants to assimilate into the dominant
culture. At the same time, the findings also show that there is no evidence that the assimilating activities they
offer will lead to long-term employment.
Research limitations/implications – Given that migration across national borders has become a common
phenomenon, the author suggests a call for critical reflections on the taken-for-granted notions of both self and
others and the influences colonial discourses have on integration.
Practical implications – The author would suggest a shift of focus from immigrants’ cultural adjustment to
society’s and employers’ responsibilities and readiness to adjust to prevailing conditions.
Originality/value – The study contributes to the labor market literature and the diversity management
literature by adding insights from public labor market mediators’ experiences of the help they offer immigrants
to enter the labor market. It shows how mediators make use of dominating discourses to secure cultural
hegemony.

Purpose – In a world where innovation became a “buzzword” and everyone within companies is required to
foster innovation, the engagement of people toward innovation is fundamental to prompt individual motivation
and actions to make innovation happen. However, despite the relevance of the relationship between
engagement and innovation, the literature on the topic appears still fragmented. The purpose of this study is to
provide an overview of the topic through a systematic literature review.
Design/methodology/approach – A final sample of 108 papers has been selected and analyzed through
co-citation and textmining analyses. The former enabled the analysis of the structure of the theoretical foundation
of the filed, while the latter facilitated a systematic and unbiased content-driven review of the literature.
Findings – The results of the analysis indicated two main areas of interest describing the relationship between
engagement and innovation. On the one hand, there is the focus on “engagement as an attitude,” intended as the
capacity of individuals to generate and realize innovation. On the other hand, there is a stream of literature
focused on “engagement as involvement,” which refers to co-innovation paradigms, involving both internal
and external stakeholders.
Research limitations/implications – From an academic perspective, this paper highlights the relevance of
the “human-side” of innovation, proposing avenues for future research that dig into the relationship between
people’s engagement and innovation dynamics.Moreover, it shows how the recent developments in the innovation
management literature are coherent with this emerging relevance of the human perspective in innovation.
Practical implications – From a practitioner’s perspective, this paper helps managers by highlighting the
two different approaches that they can have in terms of engagement. The study aims to help them in identifying
the kind of engagement they are looking for in their employees and other innovation stakeholder having the
support to find relevant studies in that direction.

Abstract
Purpose – This study aims to introduce the duration of uniqueness, an important dimension of unique
products. It studies how choices between products with long versus short duration of uniqueness are
influenced by the interaction between pressure and consumers’ need for uniqueness (NFU).
Design/methodology/approach – This research uses a multi-method study approach. A pilot fieldstudy
tested the novelty and importance of the research by asking retail professionals to predict the choice of
a hypothetical consumer. A retrospective study assessed the importance of duration of uniqueness in unique
product choices, by asking consumers about a real and recent unique product purchase. Four additional
experimental studies directly tested hypotheses by manipulating pressure and by measuring or manipulating
uniqueness motivations.
Findings – The pilot field-study showed the novelty and relevance of this research for professionals. Study
1 revealed that, retrospectively, uniqueness duration was considered important for the choice of unique
products, by high-NFU consumers under pressure. Studies 2 and 3 demonstrated that pressure increases the
tendency of high-NFU, but not low-NFU, consumers to choose products with long over short uniqueness
duration. Study 4 provided initial evidence for the process behind the effect. Study 5 showed that
considerations of uniqueness duration when choosing mediated the effects.
Research limitations/implications – The results of the pilot field-study and retrospective study might
be affected by recall bias or lay theories. The findings need to be replicated with other sources of pressure and
uniqueness. This calls for further research

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate cross-gender effects of gender stereotypes in advertising. More
specifically, it proposes that the negative effects found in studies of women’s reactions to stereotyped female
portrayals should hold across gender portrayal and target audience gender.
Design/methodology/approach – In two experimental studies, the effects of stereotyped portrayals (vs
non-stereotyped portrayals) across gender are compared.
Findings – The results show that advertising portrayals of women and men have a presumed negative
influence on others, leading to higher levels of ad reactance, which has a negative impact on brand-related effects
acrossmodel and participant gender, and for gender stereotypes in terms of physical characteristics and roles.
Research limitations/implications – Whereas previous studies have focused on reactions of women to
female stereotypes, the current paper suggests that women and men alike react negatively to stereotyped
portrayals of other genders.
Practical implications – The results indicate that marketers can benefit from adapting a more mindful
approach to the portrayals of gender used in advertising.
Originality/value – The addition of a cross-gender perspective to the literature on gender stereotypes in
advertising is a key contribution to this literature.

Purpose – This study aims to take a dual-process perspective and argues that peer influence on increasing
impulse buying may also operate automatically. If-then plans, which can automate action control, may, thus, help
regulate peer influence. This research extends existing literature explicating the deliberate influence of social norms.
Design/methodology/approach – Study 1 (N = 120) obtained causal evidence that forming an
implementation intention (i.e. an if-then plan designed to automate action control) reduces peer impact on impulse
buying in a laboratory experiment with young adults (students) selecting food items. Study 2 (N = 686) obtained
correlational evidence for the role of norms, automaticity and implementation intentions in impulse buying using
a large sample of high-school adolescents working on a vignette about clothes-shopping.
Findings – If-then plans reduced impulse purchases in the laboratory (Study 1). Both reported deliberation
on peer norms and the reported automaticity of shopping with peers predicted impulse buying but an
implementation intention to be thriftily reduced these links (Study 2).
Research limitations/implications – This research highlights the role of automatic social processes in
problematic consumer behaviour. Promising field studies and neuropsychological experiments are discussed.
Practical implications – Young consumers can gain control over automatic peer influence by using ifthen
plans, thereby reducing impulse buying.
Originality/value – This research helps understand new precursors of impulse buying in understudied
European samples of young consumers.

Purpose – Firms have begun to introduce virtual agents (VAs) in service encounters, both in online and
offline environments. Such VAs typically resemble human frontline employees in several ways (e.g. the VAs
may have a gender and a name), which indicates the presence of an assumption by VA designers – and by
firms that employ them – that VA humanness is a positively charged characteristic. This study aims to
address this assumption by examining antecedents to perceived humanness in terms of attribution of agency,
emotionality and morality, and the impact of perceived humanness on customer satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed online to participants who had been
interacting with existing VAs, and they were asked to focus on one of them for this study. The questionnaire
comprised measures of antecedents to perceived humanness of VAs, perceived humanness per se and
customer satisfaction. A structural equation modeling approach was used to assess associations between the
variables.
Findings – Attributions of agency, emotionality and morality to VAs contributed positively to the
perceived humanness of the VAs, and perceived humanness was positively associated with customer
satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications – Additional humanness capabilities should be explored in further
research.
Practical implications – Firms using VAs in service encounters should make attempts to maximize
perceived VA humanness, and this study shows that it may be beneficial if such attempts comprise signals
that VAs have agency, emotionality and morality.
Originality/value – By examining VAs in terms of a set of fundamental human capabilities, the present
study contributes to existing research on human–VA service encounters, which to date has focused on more
superficial VA characteristics (such as if the VAhas a face and gender

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of human resource (HR) management practices
on achieving competitive advantage through studying the mediating role of employee satisfaction in the
context of five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus.
Design/methodology/approach – To produce numeric data as well as to test the hypothesis, the researchers
employed structural equation modeling and AMOS. The testing included (n¼439) questionnaires. The model
suggested by the authors examined the tourism sector, and in particular, five-star hotels located in Northern Cyprus.
Findings – The main research findings revealed that HR practices had a significant effect on competitive
advantage. By comparison, the research findings revealed that the mediator variable had no effect on
achieving competitive advantage for five-star hotels in Northern Cyprus.
Originality/value – This study demonstrates originality by responding to the recommendations of prior
studies conducted on HR in Northern Cyprus Island. This makes a theoretical contribution to the field, since
only Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus, which makes conducting research on this country a challenge for
researchers worldwide. Based on this study’s outcomes, this paper discusses its theoretical and practical
implications, as well as recommendations for future research.

Design/methodology/approach – This phenomenological research is based on data gathered from 30
ostracized teaching faculty members working in Pakistani public and private HEIs through in-depth semistructured
interviews. The interviews were tape-recorded, and transcription was entered in NVivo 12 Plus
software to conduct thematic analysis.
Findings – This study found that provocative and submissive victim status, as well as the specific contextual
factors in Pakistani HEIs (i.e. negative competition, cronyism, egoism and poor interpersonal relationships), is
responsible for fostering workplace ostracism and yielding unique outcomes in each case.
Originality/value – This study has taken the scantly used target-centric victimization framework to
distinguish the causes and consequences of workplace ostracism based on the nature of victim and work
context in Pakistani HEIs .

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to deal with the role of the human metaphor (anthropomorphism) and
consumers’ liking for the humanized version of the brand as antecedents of three key components of brand
love: self-brand integration, positive emotional connection and feelings of anticipated separation distress.
Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 399 consumers provided information about a brand from a
stated list of 16 brands of clothing.
Findings – Both anthropomorphism and consumers’ liking for the humanized brand have positive effects on
specific components of brand love. The results confirm that brand anthropomorphism is only desirable when
the humanized version of the brand is attractive for consumers.
Research limitations/implications – A potential shortcoming is the qualitative technique employed to
observe anthropomorphic thought. Collecting ratings of anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic traits
could be viewed as a method more easily applied in market research surveys.
Practical implications – Managers have to control how consumers imagine the brand as a human entity
because it affects brand love. For example, by tracking consumers’ opinions and traits of those people associated
with the brand and brand user stereotypes can condition consumers’ imagination of the humanized brand.
Originality/value – Compared to the limited number of studies about the relationship between
anthropomorphism and brand love, this study focuses on the effects of anthropomorphism as a process, and
not as a personal trait, on brand love. It also relies on consumers’ imagination instead of brand personification
strategies to stimulate anthropomorphism.

existing gap in the research on brand hate in consumer behavior in service brands.
Design/methodology/approach – A survey-based data was modeled after theory that aims to apply
concepts to the telecommunications industry. With a solid model grounded and context-adapted, a mediation
analysis of the role of brand hate in negative antecedents and consequences toward brands was performed.
Findings – Brand hate was found to mediate all the negative relationships proposed, while showing to be
especially significant in mediating negative word of mouth. This model appropriately fits the services’
marketing brand and revealed new insights into the function of brand hate in negative relationships that are
specific to service marketing consumer brands.
Research limitations/implications – Branding theory may benefit from deeper insights into the negative
side of consumer–brand relationships. A broader illustration of its constituents in different industries and the
recovery of the management approach to these circumstances bring innovation and a richer understanding,
specially to the role of brand hate in the mediation context as seen in the literature (Hegner et al., 2017;
Zarantonello et al., 2016)
Practical implications – Managerial implications include assessing brands in analyzing and relating to
different emotions and concepts from customers, allowing to prioritize and mapping the customer relationship
touchpoints.
Originality/value – The present study presents a first insight of brand hate in the context of the service
industry of telecommunications in southern Europe while testing brand hate as a mediator involving negative
predictors leading to negative outcomes in consumer–brand relationships.

between role clarity and user’s willingness to accept AI technology. And, trust related to the use of AI-based
technology strengthens the relationship between ability and user’s willingness to accept AI technology.

Design/methodology/approach – For this, this study used a survey method and multiple regression
analyses with multisource data from 256 Korean employees and their supervisors.
Findings – The results suggest the following. First, workplace ostracism was negatively associated with
supervisor-rated in-role performance and organizational citizenship behaviors. Second, there was a stronger
negative relationship between workplace ostracism and supervisor-rated in-role performance/organizational
citizenship behaviors for employees with low as opposed to those with high levels of perceived organizational
support.
Originality/value – This study is the first one to examine the moderating effect of perceived organizational
support on the relationship between workplace ostracism and supervisor-rated in-role performance/
organizational citizenship behavior.

Design/methodology/approach – The methodology was quantitative and is based on a survey with a
sample of 313 participants, all of whom were employed in several organisations located in Portugal.
Findings – A significant and negative effect of organisational practices of competences development,
perceived internal employability and affective commitment on turnover intentions was verified. A total serial
mediation effect was also found from perceived internal employability and affective commitment in the
relationship between organisational practices of competences development (i.e., training, individualised
support and functional rotation) and turnover intentions.
Practical implications – These practices should be developed by leaders of organisations in order that
employees feel that the organisation is investing in their development, which can lead to an increase in their
emotional attachment towards the organisation and consequently increase their desire to stay in the organisation.
Originality/value – This study makes two important contributions. First, it confirms the existence of a
significant and negative relationship between perceived internal employability and turnover intentions. Second, it

Purpose – This study aims to test the effectiveness of a training intervention based on the psychology of
perception, delivered to young Italian workers and employees, with low education, hired with an
apprenticeship contract and involved in a compulsory training course (duration 32 h; the training intervention
reported in the paper covers the first 8 h) whose aim was to let them develop such relational competencies as
communication and cooperation with others.
Design/methodology/approach – By making use of optical-geometric illusions and ambiguous figures,
participants were accompanied through a training intervention with the dual purpose of undermining their
naive certainties about why they see what they see and increasing their awareness of how the perceptual
processes work. At the beginning of the intervention, at the end of the 32 h (that is, after about a month) and
after about one year from the end of the course, participants were administered a questionnaire to monitor the
results of the training course by measuring their “perception awareness”.
Findings – “Perception awareness” increased from the beginning to the end of the course and still scored
higher after one year. “Perception awareness” was positively related to communication and cooperation.
Originality/value – Although the literature is full of training courses delivered to improve communication
and cooperation with others, little research has been carried out on perception-based training interventions
delivered to young adults with low education hired with an apprenticeship contract for which this kind of
training is compulsory.

Purpose – This paper aims to introduce an information and communication technology (ICT) artifact that
uses text mining to support the innovative and standardized assessment of professional competences within
the validation of prior learning (VPL). Assessment means comparing identified and documented professional
competences against a standard or reference point. The designed artifact is evaluated by matching a set of
curriculum vitae (CV) scraped from LinkedIn against a comprehensive model of professional competence.
Design/methodology/approach – A design science approach informed the development and evaluation
of the ICT artifact presented in this paper.
Findings – A proof of concept shows that the ICT artifact can support assessors within the validation of
prior learning procedure. Rather the output of such an ICT artifact can be used to structure documentation in
the validation process.
Research limitations/implications – Evaluating the artifact shows that ICT support to assess
documented learning outcomes is a promising endeavor but remains a challenge. Further research should
work on standardized ways to document professional competences, ICT artifacts capture the semantic content
of documents, and refine ontologies of theoretical models of professional competences.
Practical implications – Text mining methods to assess professional competences rely on large bodies of
textual data, and thus a thoroughly built and large portfolio is necessary as input for this ICT artifact.
Originality/value – Following the recent call of European policymakers to develop standardized and ICTbased
approaches for the assessment of professional competences, an ICT artifact that supports the automatized
assessment of professional competenceswithin the validation of prior learning is designed and evaluated.

Purpose – This paper contributes to the theory of the relationship between human resource management
(HRM) and innovation at small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by conducting a conceptual analysis of the
question why Germany boasts by far the highest number of “Hidden Champion” SMEs. This is done by case
studies from the army and public financial management of aid disbursal in developing countries. Implications
for HRM at SMEs are discussed.
Design/methodology/approach – Conceptual analysis using case studies.
Findings – Contributing towards filling the gap concerning theoretical underpinnings of the link between
HRM and innovation, we suggest that interdisciplinary work from relevant organisational case studies
indicates that the concept of institutional design to provide motivational incentives may be relevant, especially
concerning high performance systems with bundles of HRM practices. Specifically, the fundamental principle
of subsidiarity is found to be important.
Research limitations/implications – The research is broadly applicable to organisations of all kinds, as the
diverse case studies indicate. We point towards tentative implications for the firms that account for the
majority of the work force, namely SMEs, and among them the most successful ones, the so-called “Hidden
Champions”.
Practical implications – HR managers can improve motivation, performance and innovation by
decentralising decision-making as far as possible, while ensuring the overall organisational goals are well
understood and shared, and resources are dedicated to train and educate staff. Additionally, the conception of
rank-order competitions complements the institutional design.
Social implications – Greater productivity and material performance as well as greater job satisfaction via
larger autonomy and decision-making power on the local level can be achieved by the application of
subsidiarity as key HRM configuration. This can be employed at SMEs, as discussed, but also other
organisations. Further, the principle of subsidiarity and the greater emphasis on staff training and education
may help reduce inequality

Purpose – Non-technical skills are of increasing importance for safety engineers to perform their job. In their
position as expert consultants, they work closely with managers. Thus, gaining management support is
oftentimes crucial for safety engineers to successfully improve occupational health and safety. Drawing on
organizational support theory (OST), this study investigates how safety engineers’ non-technical skills in
communication and persuasion (i.e. rational and hard influence tactics) are related with their management
support, and how management support is related with their individual task proficiency (ITP). The purpose of
this paper is to examine the moderating role of safety engineers’ expert power in this context.
Design/methodology/approach – Using an online questionnaire, survey data were collected from 251 safety
engineers working in Austria.
Findings – Rational influence tactics are positively related to ITP via management support, whereas hard
influence tactics are not. Safety engineers’ expert power moderates the relationship between influence
tactics and management support and, consequently ITP. High (vs low) expert status strengthens the
positive relationship of rational influence tactics on ITP via management support. For hard influence
tactics, high (vs low) expert power buffered the negative relationship of upward appeal and pressure on ITP
via management support.
Practical implications – Safety engineers should rely on rational persuasion when cooperating with
management to obtain support and improve their own performance.
Originality/value – This study connects the effect of influence tactics in the context of safety engineers’
work performance with OST. It demonstrates that safety engineers’ influence tactics are related to work role
performance through management support and that these relationships are moderated by expert power.

with care commissioners, service providers and care workers across Wales. There were 113 participants in total.
Findings – These demonstrate fragmented time’s negative consequences for service providers, care workers
and, ultimately, care quality.
Research limitations/implications – No care recipients were interviewed and care quality was explored
through the perceptions of other stakeholders.
Social implications – For policy makers, tensions are evidenced between aspirations for high-quality
care and commissioning practice that mitigates against it. Current care commissioning practices need
urgent review.
Originality/value – The research extends the definition of fragmented time and integrates with a model of
care quality to demonstrate its negative consequences. Links between employment practice and care quality
have only previously been hinted at.

Purpose – This study explores how compassionate managerial leadership style can help to mitigate
workplace stressors and alleviate stress experiences among employees—particularly in an extreme situation,
such as the current global COVID-19 pandemic. The study’s context is Nigeria’s banking, manufacturing and
healthcare sectors, which have a history of high employee stress levels.
Design/methodology/approach – Using a qualitative, interpretive methodology, the study adopts the
thematic analysis process (TAP) to draw and analyse data from semi-structured telephone interviews with 10
banking, 11 manufacturing and 9 frontline healthcare workers in Nigeria.
Findings – It was found that a compassionate managerial leadership can drive a considerate response to
employees’ “fear of job (in)security”, “healthcare risk” and concerns about “work overload, underpayment and
delayed payment”, which respondents considered to be some of the key causes of increased stress among
employees during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Research limitations/implications – The study is limited to exploring the relationship between
compassionate managerial leadership and an organisation’s ability to manage employee stress in the COVID-
19 situation, using 30 samples from organisations operating in three Nigerian cities and sectors. Future studies
may involve more Nigerian cities, sectors and samples. It may also possibly include quantitative combination to
allow generalisation of findings.
Practical implications – In order to survive in extreme situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic,
organisations are forced to take drastic and often managerialist-driven work measures which can trigger high
stress levels, low productivity and absenteeism among employees. Hence, organisations would benefit from
implementing compassion-driven policies that are more inclusive and responsive to the workplace stressors
facing employees.
Originality/value – Employee stress has been widely explored in many areas, including definitions,
stressors, strains, possible interventions and coping strategies. There remains, however, a dearth of
scholarship on how management-leadership compassion can help to reduce employee stress levels in extreme
conditions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic — particularly in emerging economies.

Design/methodology/approach – The study uses a discrete choice experiment with 232 business students.
A hierarchical Bayes approach to conjoint analysis uncovers part-worth heterogeneity and allows for
subsequent cluster and regression analysis of the choice data.
Findings – The findings identify a dominant job-oriented preference type and a minor career-oriented
preference type. Anticipatory socialization through personal prior work experience and the occupation of
friends decreases adherence to the logic of profession and increases the relevance of the family logic. The
parents’ occupation has only a minimal influence on preferences.
Practical implications – The study provides attribute-based recommendations on how professional service
firms can effectively address the complex expectations of potential applicants in their job ads for an entry
position and underlines the role of intra-generational reference groups as important anticipatory socializers.
Originality/value – By testing individual socialization effects at the pre-hire stage and beyond the
organizational level, the study fills a void in both the recruitment and the institutional literature.

Purpose – Many HRM practices are never thoroughly implemented, or are implemented ineffectively. To
better understand what line managers need to implement HRM practices effectively, the authors have
developed and validated a psychometrically sound measurement instrument dealing with line managers’
attributions for effective HRM implementation. Based on the theory of causal attributions, the authors
distinguish between internal and external attributions that determine how line managers implement HRM
practices on the work floor.
Design/methodology/approach – A multidimensional approach has been used, and, after collecting data
from 471 line managers, thorough scale development guidelines and validation procedures have been applied
for instrument development.
Findings – The instrument’s psychometric qualities have been assessed by calculating the reliability and
validity of line managers’ internal attributions – including its composing dimensions of desire and competences
– and their external attributions – including the dimensions of support, capacity and policy and procedures. In
particular, both convergent and discriminant validity as well as intra-class correlations have been established.
The newly developed measures are found to be of good quality. The scales appear to discriminate well between
the distinguished groups and show a good variation within groups.
Practical implications – The developed measurement instrument helps HRM professionals to better
understand line managers’ attributions to effectively implement HRM practices and to provide them with
support and training for effective HRM implementation.

Purpose – Entrepreneurial identity aspiration refers to the desire to occupy an entrepreneurial role in the
future and is an essential impetus for initially engaging in entrepreneurial activities. Building on identity
theory, the article investigates the effects of personal attitudes, experiences and inclination towards specific
practices on the strength of entrepreneurial identity aspiration.
Design/methodology/approach – This article applies multiple linear regression analysis to test the
developed hypotheses on an original sample of 127 vocational college students in Austria.
Findings – Results show that risk-taking propensity, proactiveness, entrepreneurial self-efficacy and
competitiveness drive entrepreneurial identity aspiration. The effects of innovativeness and need for achievement
motivationarenonsignificant.Data further suggest that entrepreneurial identity aspirationis related togender,while
entrepreneurial exposure and previous entrepreneurship education show no or adverse effects.
Practical implications – Based on our findings, the authors argue that education should focus on teaching
and discussing the identified attitudes and inclinations to foster the formation of entrepreneurial identities.
Doing so increases students’ aspirations and provides them with the necessary cognitive underpinnings for
subsequent entrepreneurial action. The article suggests action-based teaching to achieve this goal.
Originality/value – This article is the first to investigate antecedents of entrepreneurial identity aspiration by
connecting it to essential concepts of entrepreneurship research. The authors extend previous work on
entrepreneurial identity and add to the theoretical approaches for research in entrepreneurship education.
Furthermore, the article points out central aspects that should receive additional attention in educational
settings.

Purpose – Employees’ satisfaction and productivity is one of the main interests of employers. Psychological
comfort can cause dissatisfaction with their work. Thus, it is important to understand what factors contribute
to employees’ satisfaction in workplaces. The purpose of this paper is to identify the weight of contribution of
each design parameter on increasing psychological satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach – The study included 579 employees in five offices in The Netherlands
through an online survey. The typologies of offices vary in terms of office layouts, orientations and façade.
Additionally, a parameter of desk location was included as this factor may be associated with user
satisfaction. Kruskal–Wallis H test, categorical regression, and logistic regression analyses were performed to
examine the impact of these design parameters on psychological user satisfaction.
Findings – The results revealed the impact of design parameters on the psychological satisfaction. The
parameters of office layouts and desk locations were the significant predictor factors for the probability of
satisfaction variables (e.g. privacy, concentration, communication, social contact and territoriality). The parameters
for optimal satisfaction were found in cellular office, north-west orientedworkstation and 4maway from a window.
Originality/value – Psychological comfort is an inevitable aspect in user satisfaction studies. This paper,
therefore, measures and predicts the relationship between design factors and employees’ satisfaction through
case studies in The Netherlands. The findings help designers, architects, planners and facility managers to
develop user-focussed office design principles supporting employees’ work performance.

Purpose – This paper reviews the current literature on theoretical and methodological issues in discrete choice
experiments, which have been widely used in non-market value analysis, such as elicitation of residents’
attitudes toward recreation or biodiversity conservation of forests.
Design/methodology/approach – We review the literature, and attribute the possible biases in choice
experiments to theoretical and empirical aspects. Particularly, we introduce regret minimization as an
alternative to random utility theory and sheds light on incentive compatibility, status quo, attributes nonattendance,
cognitive load, experimental design, survey methods, estimation strategies and other issues.
Findings – The practitioners should pay attention to many issues when carrying out choice experiments in
order to avoid possible biases. Many alternatives in theoretical foundations, experimental designs, estimation
strategies and even explanations should be taken into account in practice in order to obtain robust results.
Originality/value – The paper summarizes the recent developments in methodological and empirical issues
of choice experiments and points out the pitfalls and future directions both theoretically and empirically.

Purpose – This study provides empirical evidence of the economic valuation of ecosystem services. It
examines the willingness-to-pay (WTP) and compensating surplus (CS) in response to policy change based on
focus group discussion (FGD) and survey.
Design/methodology/approach – A randomized conjoint analysis based experiment was conducted in
seven villages of Sundarbans in Bangladesh to elicit stated preference data and measure WTP and CS. Each
respondent faced three options in every choice card-two hypothetical alternatives and one status quo scheme.
Four alternatives – payment for ecosystem services, storm protection, erosion control and habitat for fish
breeding – are randomly and simultaneously assigned to the two alternatives.
Findings – The findings suggest that age, income, education, family size and occupational status are the
influential factor to choice the relevant attributes of ecosystem services and their levels. Villagers would like to
pay annually Tk. 703, Tk. 281, and Tk. 59 for lower, moderate, and higher ecosystem services. With these WTP,
they get surplus Tk. 760, Tk. 138, and Tk. 346 respectively.
Research limitations/implications – The lower WTP does not necessarily imply low demand for
ecosystem service, as the findings from WTP illustrate potential demand for ecosystem services of
Sundarbans.
Practical implications – The study provides an important insight into the ecosystem services and values of
Sundarbans mangrove forests for welfare and can inform policy for sustainable use of resources of this forest.
Originality/value – There is a crucial gap in understanding what could villagers be ready for WTPfor better
ecosystem services of Sundarbans mangrove forest, how do payment based ecosystem services, as a proxy for
the conservation of Sundarbans mangrove, and to what extent the policy can be strengthened.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate an English Proficiency (EP) programme and its efficacy
with respect to students’ academic performance in a university within a multi-lingual context, as the
programme had been in effect for some years.
Design/methodology/approach – A quasi-experimental approach was used to study the efficacy of an EP
programme in a university within a multilingual context. Data across two academic years were used, along
with regression discontinuity design.
Findings – Results suggest that the EP programme had a significant and positive intervention effect on
students’ initial semester grade point average. The programme effect size was found to be medium to large.
Research limitations/implications – It might be useful to extend the study for one more year for more
concrete conclusions. As the study was anchored upon the structure of the 2016 EP programme, any major
curricular/structural change to the programme warrants another study.
Practical implications – This study demonstrated that the implementation of EP programmes in higher
education institutions is essential not only for international students who are foreign language speakers of
English but also for domestic students in English-speaking countries, especially for bi/multilingual speakers.
Originality/value – Previous studies related to the efficacy of EP within higher education have focused on
international students who speak English as an additional/foreign language. Further, most studies have
focussed on students’ self-reported experiences and have yielded disparate findings. This study contributes to
scholarship as it addresses the under-researched area related to domestic students who speak English as the
first language in a bi/multi-lingual context.

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and
international student mobility from an alternative perspective and to reveal descriptive findings.
Design/methodology/approach – This study follows qualitative research methodology. In accordance with
the purpose of the study, the data were collected by the literature review and then it was analyzed by the
descriptive analysis method. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on international student mobility and the
relationships between these variables are explained by tables and classifications.
Findings – According to the findings obtained, the restrictions in physical student mobility and shutdown are
observed as the biggest challenges that occurred in higher education during the COVID-19. On a global scope,
international student mobility has experienced a major break. Physical campus life is still on standby. Online
higher education does not give any campus life as before. Students cannot benefit formcity’s or country’s facilities
when studying online at home country. The collaboration between university and business has been declined and
this is even more discouraging for international students. The hybrid education model produced an intermediate
solution in this period. On the other hand, the rise of online education has created new techniques for higher
education. University studentswho cannot go abroad attend different countries lectures and education programs.
But also a new challenge has come as the access of online platforms in under developing countries university
students. Online education system also discussed in terms of creating inequality in higher education.
Research limitations/implications – This study focused on student mobility and not focused about
academic mobility.
Practical implications – It is seen that the traditional higher education system has been adapted into online
distance higher education system since COVID-19 crises began globally. On the other side, it is observed that
most of studies have focused the effect of COVID-19 on university students based on the transition to online

What factors affect Ph.D. student’s
satisfaction with their supervisor?

Purpose – How frequently may be advisable for a supervisor to meet a PhD student? Are PhD students more
satisfied if supervised by someone of the same gender, nationality or with common research interests? Thus far,
we lack quantitative evidence regarding similar crucial aspects of managing PhD supervision. The goal of this
study is hence to investigate what factors affect Ph.D. students’ satisfaction about the professional and
personal relationships with their supervisors.
Design/methodology/approach – We focus on the characteristics of the interactions between the student
and the supervisor, controlling for other important factors, namely, the supervisor’s and student’s traits, and
the characteristics of the context.We employ survey responses from 971 Ph.D. students at two public, researchoriented
and internationally renowned universities in Hong Kong and South Korea.
Findings – The results show the importance of meeting the supervisor at least once per week. Students are
more satisfied of the relationship with their supervisor when they have similar research interests, whereas a
key finding is that similarity in terms of gender or nationality does not matter. We also found remarkable
differences between disciplines in the level of satisfaction (up to 30%), and that students are more satisfied
when the supervisor is strongly involved in international research, whereas satisfaction is negatively affected
by the number of Ph.D. students supervised.
Originality/value – The article’s findings suggest that students are not more satisfied of their relationship
with their supervisors when they have the same gender or nationality, whereas it is other traits of their
interaction, such as the frequency of meetings and the similarity of research interest, which matter.

Purpose – The concept of information security culture, which recently gained increased attention, aims to
comprehensively grasp socio-cultural mechanisms that have an impact on organizational security. Different
measurement instruments have been developed to measure and assess information security culture using
survey-based tools. However, the content, breadth and face validity of these scales vary greatly. This study
aims to identify and provide an overview of the scales that are used to measure information security culture
and to evaluate the rigor of reported scale development and validation procedures.
Design/methodology/approach – Papers that introduce a new or adapt an existing scale of information
security culture were systematically reviewed to evaluate scales of information security culture. A standard
search strategy was applied to identify 19 relevant scales, which were evaluated based on the framework of 16
criteria pertaining to the rigor of reported operationalization and the reported validity and reliability of the
identified scales.
Findings – The results show that the rigor with which scales of information security culture are validated
varies greatly and that none of the scales meet all the evaluation criteria. Moreover, most of the studies
provide somewhat limited evidence of the validation of scales, indicating room for further improvement.
Particularly, critical issues seem to be the lack of evidence regarding discriminant and criterion validity and
incomplete documentation of the operationalization process

Purpose – This study aims to apply the extended theory of planned behaviour (ETPB) to investigate the
factors influencing the intention to give zakat on employment income.
Design/methodology/approach – This study draws the required data through a survey in three main cities
Makkah, Medina and Jeddah in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The final data sample is consisting of 650
useable questionnaires to analyse the objective of this study.
Findings – The study finds that moral norm, injunctive norm, descriptive norm and past behaviour have a
significant influence on the intention to pay zakat on employment income. The perceived behavioural control
and attitude have a negative and weak impact on the intention to give zakat on income.
Research limitations/implications – The findings of this study can be useful for the policymakers and
regulators to enhance peoples’ awareness to give zakat to eradicate poverty and inequality in Muslim societies.
zakat is for the deprived people, so the consequences of this study might help to improve their liveability.
Originality/value – This study is unique because it identified the behavioural factors that affect the peoples’
intention to give zakat in KSA have yet to be profoundly explored in the literature. This study has gathered
primary data and applied the ETPB to identify the factors influencing the zakat compliance behaviour in KSA.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to investigate restaurant clientele tipping behavior and its
inspiration on foodservice empathy within two- and three-star hotels in Kisumu County, Kenya. This was with
the objective of analyzing the tipping effect on restaurant food service quality with an emphasis on
Parasuraman, Zeithmal and Barry’s empathy as a key dimension of quality in accordance to the
SERVQUAL model.
Design/methodology/approach – For the purpose of this study, food service empathy was investigated in
relation to the influence of tipping on restaurant food service quality. Further, a census of all the two and three
star-rated hotels within Kisumu County was carried out. The study applied descriptive research design in the
investigation on the tipping behavior and its inspiration on foodservice empathy. Moreover, simple random
sampling was employed in the selection of clients since it yielded a sample that is representative of the
population. Additionally, the study employed the use of questionnaires for collection of data, which were coded,
analyzed and presented in frequencies, tables and graphs.
Findings – The study findings reveal that there is a significant relationship between rewards upon perception
of service and food service empathy but failed to find a significant relation between incentives for improved
future service as well as the social norms and foodservice empathy. However, in general, the study established a
significant relationship between tipping and foodservice empathy in the sampled hotels in Kenya. Thus, in
summary, at 95% confidence level, the study concluded that there is a significant relationship between tipping
and foodservice empathy.
Research limitations/implications – This study was restricted on two and three-star hotels within Kisumu
County in Kenya with a sample size of 384 respondents, which would otherwise limit the degree to which the
findings were applied. Consequently, the study sought to collect data from restaurant clients although the
access and, therefore, direct interaction were denied by some of the hotels. Further, this study employed a
survey approach in the collection of data from restaurant clients in two and three-star hotels. Accordingly, there
was minimal local and regional research literature available on the study topic.
Practical implications – Tipping in the context of the broad global service industry, including hospitality’s
restaurant food service, is as old as Roman times. However, tipping is practiced differently across the world
with some countries practicing while other countries not practicing the act of tipping. For that reason, tipping is
not regulated in some of the countries including Kenya and therefore the lack of policy. Nonetheless, tipping is
perceived to be the genesis of food service failures as a result of discriminatory restaurant food service in
addition to increasing costs of eating out. This study therefore sought to investigate restaurant tipping
behavior and its inspiration on foodservice empathy. The study results might be applied in policy formulation
in order to curb the negative effect of tipping on food service empathy.
