Purpose – Service robotics, a branch of robotics that entails the development of robots able to assist humans in
their environment, is of growing interest in the hospitality industry. Designing effective autonomous service
robots, however, requires an understanding of Human–Robot Interaction (HRI), a relatively young discipline
dedicated to understanding, designing, and evaluating robotic systems for use by or with humans. HRI has not
yet received sufficient attention in hospitality robotic design, much like Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) in
property management system design in the 1980s. This article proposes a set of introductory HRI guidelines
with implementation standards for autonomous hospitality service robots.
Design/methodology/approach – A set of key user-centered HRI guidelines for hospitality service robots
were extracted from 52 research articles. These are organized into service performance categories to provide
more context for their application in hospitality settings.
Findings – Based on an extensive literature review, this article presents some HRI guidelines that may drive
higher levels of acceptance of service robots in customer-facing situations. Deriving meaningful HRI guidelines
requires an understanding of how customers evaluate service interactions with humans in hospitality settings
and to what degree those will differ with service robots.
Originality/value – Robots are challenging assumptions on how hospitality businesses operate. They are
being increasingly deployed by hotels and restaurants to boost productivity and maintain service levels.
Effective HRI guidelines incorporate user requirements and expectations in the design specifications.
Compilation of such information for designers of hospitality service robots will offer a clearer roadmap for them
to follow.

Abstract
Purpose – This paper sets out to corroborate the existing literature on investors’ risk tolerance and to assess
how the 2008 financial crisis has affected risk tolerance among Italian investors.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on a unique dataset of real-world portfolio choices made by 1,245
Italian investors over a period of 15 years (from 2003 to 2017), this paper presents two steps of analysis. In step
1, the whole period 2003–2017 is considered with the aim to integrate and corroborate the existing literature on
the topic of risk tolerance, considering a complete economic and financial cycle. Step 2 took 2008 as the pivotal
point between pre-crisis (2003–2008) and crisis (2009–2017) with the aim to observe the influence on risk
appetite of the economic and financial effects of the crisis.
Findings – The results obtained confirm that men are more risk tolerant than women and older people are less
risk-taking than their younger counterparts, although the relationship between age and risk tolerance is not
necessarily linear. Moreover, our paper demonstrates that a crisis scenario has an influence on Italian investors’
risk tolerance.
Practical implications – Our results are of interest to financial advisors, financial planners, asset managers,
psychologists, behavioral researchers and more in general to providers of financial products and services.
Originality/value – The results presented in this paper are relevant and original because they are based on
real investors who made real choices concerning their portfolio asset allocations.

Purpose – This study investigates whether colors red or blue in financial disclosure documents (Key Investor
Information Documents – KIIDs) affect attention distribution toward the visual stimulus and the perception of
financial attractiveness of the products.
Design/methodology/approach – In order to observe and measure financial consumers’ visual attention,
the unobtrusive methodology of eye-tracking is used on a sample of nonprofessional investors, applying an
ecological protocol, through a cross-sectional design.
Findings – Financial information processing and visual attention distribution are influenced by the color of
the KIID document, as red seems to attract attention, proxied by gazing behavior, more than blue. Red color,
compared to blue, is also observed to push investors to rate the products as less financially attractive, especially
when the product Risk Reward Profile is high.
Practical implications – The findings highlight the role of the basic visual properties of documents
conveying financial information, prompting to investigate the unconscious and automatic mechanisms of
individual’s attention and its influence on decision making.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of bank branch managers’ perceptions of
corporate social responsibility (CSR) in CSR marketing outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper proposes a causal model establishing that managers’
perceptions of CSR influence the perception of CSR held by the branch’s customers, which in turn directly
affects customer satisfaction, customer trust, customer engagement and customer loyalty. The unit of
analysis in this quantitative study is the bank branch. Two questionnaires were administered: one to branch
managers and another to five customers in each branch.
Findings – Branch managers’ perceptions of CSR have a marked influence on customers’ perceptions of CSR,
which again have a notable impact on the relationship variables studied: customer satisfaction, customer
trust, customer engagement and customer loyalty.
Research limitations/implications – The sample was taken from two banks in the same country (Spain)
and only five customers were interviewed in each branch. The type of customers analyzed should be taken
into account since a growing number of customers now carry out all of their banking online and are less likely
to visit their branch

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to measure Farmer’s adoption tendency towards drought shock,
risk-taking networks and modern irrigation technology.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on this assumption, this paper evaluated the data gathered
from 498 household surveys of Zhangye, Gansu province, PRC, by using the binary probit model. First, the
empirical data was analyzed for evaluating the impact of drought shock and risk-taking tendencies on the
adoption of modern irrigation technology by farmers. Second, the authors introduced informal risk-bearing
networks with formal risks. Final, based on the empirical results, the sustainability test, along with the
marginal effect analysis and the degree of impact was carried out.
Findings – The results show that the drought shock has a significantly deferent effect on the modern
irrigation technology of the farmers. The probability of using technology for each level of drought loss is
reduced by 15.02%. The risk-taking network has a significant role in promoting the modern irrigation
technology of farmers. The probability of adoption for each additional unit of rural household labor security
supply, the likelihood of adoption by farmers increased 23.11%, the probability of approval for each level of
relative support, and neighborhood assistance by farmers increased by 13.11% and 17.88% respectively. This
study further revealed that insurance purchases enabled farmers to adopt new irrigation technology with the
probability increased by 24.99%; easily available bank loans increased the probability of farmers using

Purpose – Based on social representation theory, this study aims to evaluate and analyze the
similarities and differences between social representations of climate change held by people living in
two territories, which have in common that they are exposed to coastal risks but have different sociocultural
contexts: on the one hand, Cartagena (Colombia) and on the other, Guadeloupe (French
overseas department, France).
Design/methodology/approach – A double approach, both quantitative and qualitative, of social
representation theory was adopted. The data collection was undertaken in two phases. First, the
content and organization of social representation of climate change (SRCC) was examined with a
quantitative study of 946 participants for both countries, followed by a qualitative study of 63
participants for both countries also.
Findings – The study finds unicity in the SRCC for the quantitative study. In contrast, the qualitative study
highlights differences at the level of the institutional anchoring of the climate change phenomenon in these
two different socioeconomic and political contexts.
Practical implications – These results are relevant for a reflection in terms of public policies for the
prevention and management of collective natural risks, as well as for the promotion of ecological behavior
adapted to political and ideological contexts.
Originality/value – The use of a multi-methodological approach (quantitative and qualitative) in the same
research is valuable to confirm the importance of an in-depth study of the social representations of climate
change because of the complexity of the phenomenon.

Purpose – Building on conservation of resources theory and unfolding theory of turnover, this paper aims
to propose a model of the effects of despotic leadership on employees’ job satisfaction and turnover intention
in the hospitality industry. In this model, the authors theorize psychological distress to play an intervening
role among the aforesaid linkages.
Design/methodology/approach – The data were collected in three-waves from 212 employees working
in Palestinian restaurants. A covariance-based matrix in structural equation modeling was used to verify the
proposed linkages in the study. A marker variable was used to control the commonmethod bias.
Findings – The results showed that despotic leadership has a direct negative effect on job satisfaction and a
positive indirect effect on turnover intentions. Besides, psychological distress showed to play significant
mediating effects among the aforementioned relationships.
Practical implications – This study gives insights to the hospitality industry on how despotic leadership
can be destructive and lead to negative consequences.
Originality/value – This study is unique, as it is the first study conducted on despotic leadership in a
hospitality setting. The study responded to scholarly calls made to enrich the literature pertaining to despotic
leadership and its outcomes.

Purpose – Cruising is one of the industries most susceptible to the current COVID-19 health crisis, due to the
closed environment and the contacts between cruisers and crewmembers. This study aims to understand if the
perceived crowding and the health risk perception related to the pandemic situation might threaten
passengers’ intentions to cruise. The study also examines corporate reputation and trust, as well as social
motivation and self-confidence, as possible predictors of consumers’ intention to cruise.
Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the development of a structured questionnaire
submitted online via social media. Overall, 553 individuals’ responses were used for understanding the factors
that can affect consumers’ intention to cruise by performing several regression models.
Findings – The results show that the perceived crowding related to the pandemic does not seem to influence
people’s intention to cruise. On the contrary, trust in the cruise company, corporate reputation, cruisers’ selfconfidence
and research of social motivation are positive predictors of intention to cruise, thus reducing the
perceived risk’s deterring impact. The importance of such factors differs in respect of repeat and not repeat cruisers.
Practical implications – The study presents several managerial implications as it analyses the variables
that could help cruisemanagement cope better with COVID-19’s negative impact.
Originality/value – Despite the severity of COVID-19’s impact on the cruise industry, no studies have yet
focussed on how the current pandemic situation may influence customers’ intention to cruise in the future.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine scholarly impact which is critical to universities in their
aspiration to create, disseminate and apply knowledge. However, scholarly impact is an elusive concept. First,
the authors present a conceptual model to clarify different dimensions of scholarly impact (i.e. theory and
research, education, organizations and society) and four key stakeholders (i.e. other researchers, students,
practitioners and policy makers). Second, the authors provide actionable recommendations for university
administrators, researchers and educators on how to enhance impact. The scholarly impact model is flexible,
expandable, scalable and adaptable to universities in different regions of the world and with different
strategic priorities.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a general review of the literature and offered
a multidimensional and multistakeholder model of scholarly impact to guide future actions aimed at
enhancing scholarly impact.
Findings – The authors describe the multidimensional and multistakeholder nature of the critical and yet
elusive concept of scholarly impact. The authors delineate multiple dimensions of impact, different
stakeholders involved and recommendations for enhancing scholarly impact in the future.
Practical implications – The authors offer practical and actionable recommendations on how to enhance
scholarly impact. For university administrators, the authors recommend aligning scholarly impact goals with
actions and resource-allocation decisions; ensuring that performance management and reward systems are
consistent with impact goals; being strategic in selecting a journal list; developing a strong doctoral program;
and promoting practical knowledge and applications. For researchers and educators, the authors recommend
developing a personal scholarly impact plan; becoming an academic decathlete; finding ways to affect
multiple impact dimensions simultaneously; and leveraging social media to broaden impact on external
stakeholders. Implementing these recommendations will benefit other researchers, students, practitioners (e.g.
managers, consultants) and policy makers

Purpose – In studies related to education, sociology and economics, the relationship between students’
social relationships and their academic performance is one of the most important research topics; a large
number of research studies have focused on it. This study aims to analyze the previous studies about social
interaction and academic performance and attempts to reveal the underlying mechanism.
Design/methodology/approach – This study uses CiteSpace to analyze 1,843 articles on social
relationships and academic performance from 2001 to 2019. According to the co-cited literature network
results in CiteSpace, this study proposes an adapted conceptual framework of the relationship between social
relationships and academic performance. This paper further examines more studies about the two most-cited
articles in the co-cited literature network for better understanding.
Findings – From the results of the co-cited literature network, this study determines that school engagement is
an important mediator between social relationships and academic performance. This paper further examines
studies on school engagement and determine that, along with the self-determination theory, school engagement is
influenced bymultiple components of self-determination theory: autonomy, competence and relatedness.
Originality/value – According to the visual result in CiteSpace, this study examines a research trend in
which researchers scholars start to conduct micro and detailed empirical research on the impact of the specific
social networks on academic performance because of the progress of information technology. Therefore

Purpose – This paper aims to introduce a crowd-based method for theorizing. The purpose is not to achieve
a scientific theory. On the contrary, the purpose is to achieve a model that may challenge current scientific
theories or lead research in new phenomena.
Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes a case study of theorizing by using a crowd-based
method. The first section of the paper introduces what do the authors know about crowdsourcing, crowd science
and the aggregation of non-expert views. The second section details the case study. The third section analyses
the aggregation. Finally, the fourth section elaborates the conclusions, limitations and future research.
Findings – This document answers to what extent the crowd-based method produces similar results to
theories tested and published by experts.
Research limitations/implications – From a theoretical perspective, this study provides evidence to
support the research agenda associated with crowd science. The main limitation of this study is that the
crowded research models and the expert research models are compared in terms of the graph. Nevertheless,
some academics may argue that theory building is about an academic heritage.
Practical implications – This paper exemplifies how to obtain an expert-level research model by
aggregating the views of non-experts.
Social implications – This study is particularly important for institutions with limited access to costly
databases, labs and researchers.
Originality/value – Previous research suggested that a collective of individuals may help to conduct all
the stages of a research endeavour. Nevertheless, a formal method for theorizing based on the aggregation of
non-expert views does not exist. This paper provides the method and evidence of its practical implications.

Purpose – Artificial intelligence is gradually penetrating into human society. In the network era, the
interaction between human and artificial intelligence, even between artificial intelligence, becomes more and
more complex. Therefore, it is necessary to describe and intervene the evolution of crowd intelligence network
dynamically. This paper aims to detect the abnormal agents at the early stage of intelligent evolution.
Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, differential evolution (DE) and K-means clustering are
used to detect the crowd intelligence with abnormal evolutionary trend.
Findings – This study abstracts the evolution process of crowd intelligence into the solution process of DE and use
K-means clustering to identify individualswho are not conducive to evolution in the early stage of intelligent evolution.
Practical implications – Experiments show that the method we proposed are able to find out individual
intelligence without evolutionary trend as early as possible, even in the complex crowd intelligent interactive
environment of practical application. As a result, it can avoid the waste of time and computing resources.
Originality/value – In this paper, DE and K-means clustering are combined to analyze the evolution of
crowd intelligent interaction.

Design/methodology/approach – This study analyzed the data from laboratory setting first, then the
online sales data from Taobao.com to explore how the influential factors, such as online reviews (positive vs
negative mainly), risk perception (higher vs lower) and product types (experiencing vs searching), interacted
on the online purchase intention or online purchase behavior.
Findings – Compared with traditional research methods, such as questionnaire and behavioral experiment,
network big data analysis has significant advantages in terms of sample size, data objectivity, timeliness and
ecological validity.
Originality/value – Future study may consider the strategy of using complementary methods and
combining both data-driven and theory-driven approaches in research design to provide suggestions for the
development of e-commence in the era of big data.

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the structural characteristics of knowledge exchange in Zhihu Lives
to provide feasible suggestions for improving the creative enthusiasm of knowledge providers.
Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses the domain classification of Zhihu Lives to construct
a cross-domain knowledge exchange network.
Findings – This research makes the following findings: the small-world effect exists in the sponsorship
network and is conducive to enhancing the learning willingness of knowledge providers; significant
sponsorships and strong learning willingness exist among knowledge providers; the knowledge exchange is
obvious among the fields of education, reading and writing, business and lifestyle and the fields of music,
film, games, art, the internet, science and technology, design, financial economy and occupation; and
knowledge exchange is obvious among the internal fields of education, reading and writing, and business and
life style, between the internal fields of music, film, and games and art and between the internal fields of the
internet, science and technology, design, financial economy and occupation.
Originality/value – This study can provide practical suggestions for the following development of the
platform by analyzing the special phenomenon of knowledge exchange in the present stage of knowledge
exchange.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the direct impact of social intelligence and collective selfefficacy
on two components of service providers’ performance: extra-role performance and intra-role one. The
study also investigates the indirect effect of social intelligence on service providers’ performance and its
components via the mediating role of collective self-efficacy.
Design/methodology/approach – This study was undertaken to develop a conceptual framework that
integrates social intelligence, collective self-efficacy and service provider’s performance constructs in one
framework. Data was collected from 220 physicians in the Egyptian governmental hospitals. Confirmatory
factor analysis explored the latent structure of the research constructs. The current study used structural
equation modelling to test the research model hypotheses.
Findings – The study finds that social intelligence was positively associated with service providers’
performance. The results also support the significant effect of social intelligence on the two main
dimensions of service provider’s performance: extra-role (contextual) performance and intra-role (task)
performance. Moreover, the results indicate that social intelligence competences provide a basis for
collective self-efficacy and service providers’ performance for physicians in the Egyptian governmental
hospitals.
Research limitations/implications – This study collected data based on a cross-sectional design, so
further studies could test the theoretical model by using longitudinal studies’ data, which give the study
results more accuracy of results and support generalizing the results. This study considers the synergistic
effects between social intelligence and collective self-efficacy on service providers’ performance and sheds
new light on bringing new drivers for developing extra- and intra-role dimensions of service provider
performance in service literature.
Originality/value – This study is one of the first studies that integrate social intelligence and collective
self-efficacy with service providers’ performance and its dimensions in one framework. This study
contributes to knowledge by integrating the social exchange theory with the cognitive theory in one study.

Purpose – The relationship between human resource management practices (HRMP) and innovation has
been described as a black box, where a lot still needs to be investigated. Thus, the aim of this paper is to
investigate the nature of the link that exists between HRMP and innovation in both public and private
organizations. To do so, theoretical underpinnings and existence of a mediating or a moderating mechanism
is inspected.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on an empirical systematic review of research conducted
between 2010 and 2018, content analysis has been conducted for 31 peer-reviewed articles in the English
language.
Findings – Inspecting the nature of relations existed in the chosen articles, interesting findings are
addressed relative to the nature of the human resource management systems (HRMS) used, practices
encompassed and their different utility. HRMS has been shown to be associated with product innovation yet
more evidence is needed for supporting process innovation.
Practical implications – The HRMS/HRMP and innovation relationship is inspected, important
practices that would guide managers to induce innovation are highlighted. Usage of multiple HRMS and
contingency in constructing such systems is indicated.
Originality/value – Contribution to comprehend the black box and areas for future research has been
offered.

Purpose – This paper extends entrepreneurial ecosystems theory by testing how aspects of the local business
environment affect individual entrepreneurs’ ability to translate their personal resources into firm
performance.
Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from 223 business owners across Australia.
Moderation hypotheses were tested using multiple hierarchical regression and confirmed with the Preacher
and Hayes (2004) bootstrapping method.
Findings – The results show that business owners’ psychological capital, social capital and entrepreneurial
education directly affect their individual firm performance. These positive relations are moderated by specific
aspects of the business environment, such that they are stronger when the environment is more favorable.
Originality/value – This study puts individual business owners back into entrepreneurial ecosystems theory
and explains how they can make the most of their personal resources, suggesting a complex interplay where
one size does not fit all. Far-reaching practical implications for policymakers are discussed.

Purpose – Failure plays a pivotal role in entrepreneurial learning. Knowledge of the learning process that
enables an entrepreneur to re-emerge stronger after a failure, though considerable, is fragmented. This paper
systematically collects relevant literature, assigns it to the stages of the experiential learning process (concrete
experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, active experimentation; Kolb, 1984), evaluates
the research coverage of each stage and identifies promising avenues for future research.
Design/methodology/approach – This systematic literature review follows the guidelines articulated by
Short (2009) and Tranfield et al. (2003), using Web of Science and EBSCO as primary data sources. Kolb’s (1984)
experiential learning theory provides a basis for organizing the identified material into a framework of
entrepreneurial learning from failure.
Findings – The literature provides insights on all stages of the process of entrepreneurial learning from
failure. Particularly well elaborated are the nature of failure and its triggering effect for reflection, the factors
influencing reflection, the contents of the resulting learning and their application in entrepreneurial reemergence.
Other topics remain under-researched, including alternative modes of recovery, the impact of
personal attributes upon reflection, the cognitive processes underlying reflection, the transformation of failurebased
observations into logically sound concepts and the application of this learning in non-entrepreneurial
contexts.
Originality/value – This review provides the most complete overview of research into the process of
entrepreneurial learning from failure. The systematic, theory-based mapping of this literature takes stock of
current knowledge and proposes areas for future research.

Abstract
Purpose – The paper introduces a new conceptualisation of entrepreneurship that promotes a broader
perspective of the phenomenon. The purpose of the paper is to re-conceptualise the act of entrepreneurship so
as to reduce it to the fundamental behaviours and processes.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper sets out the motivations for and challenges in establishing a
broader definition of entrepreneurship. Following this, current approaches to defining entrepreneurship are
reviewed. In light of these, a definition of entrepreneurship is offered that captures a new perspective in
understanding entrepreneurship. A critique of the offered definition is offered with regards to promoting
theory development, empirical research, quality predictions and a distinctive research domain.
Findings – The authors argue that a definition of entrepreneurship that is focussed on the development and
validation of ideas provides a thought-provoking re-conceptualisation of entrepreneurship. Extant
perspectives on entrepreneurship as business/organisation creation, uncertainty, innovation, value creation
and opportunity recognition/creation are drawn on to demonstrate the applicability of the definition.
Originality/value – The pursuit for an encompassing definition of entrepreneurship has been both extensive
and earnest, which has inadvertently resulted in a sizable pool of definitions. The authors offer a reconceptualisation
of entrepreneurship with the intent to provide a broad yet coherent definition that
encompasses all acts of entrepreneurship. A benefit of this conceptualisation is the establishment of the
endpoint of the entrepreneurship process that delineates it from the domain of management.

Purpose – The aim of this article is to examine the perspectives, experiences, roles and values of Italian
primary school principals regarding the inclusion of migrant children.
Design/methodology/approach – The method of the study is qualitative and consists of a semi-structured
interview, which was carried out with 17 primary school principals and examined using content analysis.
Findings – The following six categories emerged: (1) school organisation and services, (2) projects and
activities for inclusion, (3) teaching methods and strategies, (4) assessment, (5) networking and (6) challenges.
The findings highlighted the complexity of the principals’ role; they have to take on several tasks to foster a
positive school experience for migrant students. A student-centred approach was considered relevant for
intercultural education to promote inclusion and well-being. Curriculum activities were designed according to
student needs.
Research limitations/implications – The number of participants was limited, and they all worked in a
small area of northeast Italy. Future research should examine the perspective of other school stakeholders such
as teacher coordinators, the Commission for School Inclusion, teachers and tutors.
Practical implications – The findings could be used as a framework for defining a model of the organisation
of the school useful for discussing the relevance of the activities and for comparing schools in different
contexts. The development of reflective practice to analyse the activities inside the schools could be considered.
Social implications – Stakeholders could consider the findings before making decisions and developing
policy actions countrywide.
Originality/value – The key factors included the awareness of the school principal role in managing the
school and of the importance of connecting their school with the local community and external agencies.

Abstract
Purpose – This study aims to establish a Japanese-style healthcare program customized for Japan and
Asia under ISO 9001: 2008 (ISO: International Organization for Standardization) to improve problem
areas and to inspect the effectiveness of the program. Furthermore, the authors wanted to create this
health program using the ISO widely available in Asian countries andmake an international contribution.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors implemented a 6- to 10-month health program in
Minowa Town, Matsumoto City and Nagano City in Japan. This study assessed findings frompedometric,
anthropometric and blood pressure measurements and physical fitness, blood chemistry and brain
function tests.
Findings – The comparisons were made by examining the interaction effects between groups of
participants. Groups from three regions in Japan showed significant differences on the physical fitness
tests; regarding the 10-meter obstacle walk, the results of the Minowa participants showed the greatest
improvement and the Matsumoto participants showed the second greatest improvement. In the six-min
walk, the time of the Minowa participants significantly improved.
Research limitations/implications – This health education program, which has been conducted by the
Japanese authors since 1998, measures anthropometry, brain function and physical fitness and
performs blood tests before and after the program and it measures energy consumption with a
pedometer during the program. With the aimof improving exercise via encouragement fromfriends and a
sense of community with fellow participants, participants learn together with hands-on training in tai chi
and aerobics about the importance of ongoing exercise and proper nutrition. This health education met
the Health Education ISOin 2014

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss themethodology of integrated knowledge in Islamic economics
and finance and seek to offer collective ijtihad as oneway to find solutions to the existing problems in the field.
Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the idea of multidisciplinarity or
interdisciplinarity, which uses not only traditional sources of Islam and economics, such as u sūl al-fiqh, fiqh
mu’amalat, econometrics, statistics, microeconomics and macroeconomics but also looks into behavioural and
natural sciences for inspiration and solutions. This paper is constructed using the methodology of “the two
readings”, as promoted by the International Institute of Islamic Thought, and which combines the revealed
and the existential sciences.
Findings – This paper proposes the collaborative multidisciplinary methodology as the main approach to
studying the modern problems and challenges, as well as for finding solutions in the fields of Islamic
economics and finance.
Practical implications – Studying and researching issues, particularly in the field of Islamic economics
and finance, from an interdisciplinary perspective, effectively broadens practical applications and possibilities
in Islamic finance.
Originality/value – This paper contributes to social sciences, especially the field of Islamic finance, and
calls upon researchers to engage in multidisciplinary studies.

Abstract
Purpose – The aimof this article is to give an overview of the development and current state of projectification
research. The inquiry was driven by a threefold research question: How has projectification been understood and
defined over time,what has the trajectory of the development been andwhat are themain trends and emerging ideas?
Design/methodology/approach – The article is an integrative literature reviewof research done on the notion
of projectification to date. An interdisciplinary, integrative literature review was conducted using Scopus and
Web of Science as primary sources of data collection.The full data set consists of 123 journal articles, books, book
chapters and conference contributions. With the data set complete, a thematic analysis was conducted.
Findings – Among other things, the review outlines the development and scope of projectification research
from 1995 until 2021 and discusses four emerging images of projectification: projectification as a managerial
approach, projectification as a societal trend, projectification as a human state and projectification as a
philosophical issue. These characteristics emphasize some common features of each of the images but also
imply that the way projectification is understood changes depending on the paradigmatic perspective taken by
the researcher, the time and place in which the observation was made and the level of observation.
Originality/value – The authors have outlined and discussed four images of projectification – projectification
as amanagerial approach, projectification as a societal trend, projectification as a human state and projectification
as a philosophical issue – where each image represents a special take on projectification with some prevalent
characteristics. By doing this, the authors provide a systematic categorization of research to date and thus a basis
upon which other researchers can build when furthering the understanding of projectification at large.

Abstract
Purpose – Since the early 1980s, western governments are assumed to have been either moving toward
post-bureaucratic models or transforming into so-called neo-Weberian bureaucracies. As different
public-sector (reform) models imply different ideal typical personality traits for civil servants, the purpose
of this paper is to ask the question to what extent personality requirements that governments demand from
their employees have evolved over time in line with these models.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyzed the use of big-five traits in a sample of 21,003
job advertisements for local government jobs published between 1980 and 2017, applying tools for
computer-assisted text analysis.
Findings – Using multilevel regression analyses, the authors conclude that, over time, there is a significant
increase in the use of personality descriptors related to all big-five factors.
Research limitations/implications – The authors postulate that governments nowadays are actively
looking for the “renaissance bureaucrat” in line with the neo-Weberian bureaucracy paradigm. The authors
end with a discussion of both positive and negative consequences of this development.
Originality/value – First, the authors explicitly link personality, public administration, and public
management using the Abridged Big-Five-Dimensional Circumflex model of personality. Second, by linking
observed trends in civil servant personality requirements to larger theories of public-sector reform models,
the authors narrow the gap between public administration theories and practice. Third, the software tools
that the authors use to digitalize and analyze a large number of documents (the job ads) are new to the
discipline of public administration. The research can therefore serve as a guideline for scholars who want to
use software tools to study large amounts of unstructured, qualitative data.
