Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable test metric that can ascertain health literacy as it
relates to hypertension in the population of Thailand.
Design/methodology/approach – One thousand five hundred patients from hypertension clinics in
hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand were recruited to this study. The test was developed
and divided into three latent variables and four observed variables for health literacy concepts. Indexes of Item-
Objective Congruence (IOC) from seven experts and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the entire questionnaire
were evaluated for content validity and reliability. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis with LISREL also
analyzed for construct validity.
Findings – The result illustrates that the Item-Objective Congruence was 0.68, and Cronbach’s alpha
coefficient was 0.87. The result also shows that Barlett’s Test of Sphericity was 3129.31 (p < 0.01), and the
Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy was 0.83. The model was fit to empirical data (Chisquare
5 0.02).
Originality/value – This study concludes that the Thai Hypertension Health Literacy Assessment Tool
(THHLA) created as a result of the study is valid and reliable. The test can be used to evaluate health literacy for
hypertension patients in Thailand.

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about COVID-19
among Portuguese higher education students.
Design/methodology/approach – In May 2020, all students from a Portuguese University were invited to
participate in completing an online questionnaire. A total of 262 students participated. COVID-19 related
knowledge, attitudes toward COVID-19 and preventive behaviors were assessed. Differences between
outcomes and sociodemographics were analyzed through independent t-tests and the ANOVA. A generalized
linear model was calculated to determine the predictive variables of preventive behaviors.
Findings – Students revealed good knowledge about COVID-19, correctly answering 13.06 (SD 5 1.25)
questions in a total of 14 and favorable attitudes toward preventive behaviors (M532.73, SD52.88). Students
reported always engaging in, on average, 5.81 (SD 5 2.61) of the 12 behavior analyzed. Females presented
higher levels of knowledge, more positive attitudes and engaged in more preventive behaviors than males.
Being a bachelor’s (Exp (β) 5 8.213, 95% CI: 1.791–37.670, p < 0.01) or a master’s degree student (Exp
(β) 5 7.568, 95% CI: 1.598–35.835, p < 0.05) and having positive attitudes toward preventive behavior of
COVID-19 predicted the adoption of those preventive behavior (Exp (β)51.340, 95% CI: 1.189–1.510, p<0.001).
Originality/value – This study provides useful data to plan health education programs about COVID-19
among higher education students. The continuous investment by universities in preventive campaigns is
essential to promote good preventive behaviors in the next academic year.

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of heuristic biases on investment decisions
through multiple mediation mechanisms of risk tolerance and financial literacy in the Tanzanian stock market.
Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 316 individual investors in the Tanzanian stock market was
obtained through questionnaires. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM).
Findings – The findings show that financial literacy mediates insignificantly the effects of overconfidence,
availability, anchoring and representativeness heuristics on investment decisions. Further, financial literacy
does not influence the effect of risk tolerance and investment decisions. Risk tolerance is confirmed as a positive
mediator of overconfidence, availability, anchoring and representativeness heuristics in investment decisions.
Also, the study shows that overconfidence exerts a stronger influence on investment decisions, followed by
availability, representativeness, risk tolerance, anchoring and financial literacy.
Research limitations/implications – The study deals with real investors. Therefore, it uses fewer items to
measure the constructs in order to avoid respondent bias. Further research could examine the effects of
heuristic biases on investment decisions by adding or modifying the items of particular constructs and
studying institutional investors.
Practical implications – The findings can help individual investors to analyze and evaluate their behavior
toward stock selection. Securities institutions can use this research to understand investors’ behavior, evaluate
future market trends and provide advice to the investors.
Originality/value – Previous studies have examined the impact of heuristics on the investment decisions of
individual investors. The unique empirical analysis developed in this paper is that it examines the multiple
mediation mechanisms of risk tolerance and financial literacy with respect to heuristic biases and investment
decisions in the Tanzanian stock market.

Abstract
Purpose – Drawing on social exchange theory and a cultural perspective, this study examines the relationship
between workplace ostracism and job engagement by focusing on the mediating role of felt obligation and the
moderating role of collectivism.
Design/methodology/approach – A two-wave survey was conducted over four months in a private service
business in China. The participants comprised 108 Chinese employees.
Findings – The results indicate that workplace ostracism has a negative relationship with job engagement
through a reduced sense of felt obligation. Collectivism strengthens the main effect of workplace ostracism on
felt obligation and its indirect effect on job engagement via felt obligation.
Research limitations/implications – This study contributes to understanding of the internal mechanism
of the workplace ostracism–job engagement model by identifying the mediating role of felt obligation. It also
emphasizes that collectivist cultures can enhance the effects of workplace ostracism. However, the
generalizability of our findings may be limited due to this cultural factor.
Practical implications – Our findings show that workplace ostracism plays a significant role in reducing job
engagement. Therefore, it is essential to reduce the incidence of ostracism in the workplace.
Originality/value – By addressing the previously unexplored mechanism that mediates the relationship
between workplace ostracism and job engagement, this study provides new directions for research on
workplace ostracism and job engagement.

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to aid conceptualization of social well-being at work by identifying its
components in a contemporary office context, so adequate measures can be developed to monitor social
well-being and to assess the impact of interventions in the workplace.
Design/methodology/approach – This study used existing interview data from recent post-occupancy
evaluations of two large activity-based flexible offices in the Dutch public sector. Data-driven concept mapping
of 182 different employees’ statements on social aspects of well-being was used to find communalities in their
perceptions.
Findings – From the data 14 key concepts emerged referring to employees’ social needs, reactions to (anti-)
social behaviour of others and perceived social affordances of the work environment. Contrary to established
theory, social well-being appeared to be a context-bound phenomenon, including components of both
short-term hedonic and long-term eudaimonic well-being.
Research limitations/implications – The findings serve as an inductive source for the further
development of adequate measures of social well-being at work. Limitations concern the specific (cultural)
setting of the cases and the use of existing data.
Practical implications – Preliminary suggestions for fostering social well-being include change
management, participatory design, being alert of the identified risks of activity-based offices and
supporting privacy regulation, identity marking and a sense of community, as well as a diversity of
informal face-to-face interactions balanced with quiet spaces.
Originality/value – This article contributes to the conceptualization of social well-being in contemporary
offices by discussing established social well-being theory and analysing real-world data, using a method novel
to management research.

Purpose – The paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the drivers for the use of Industry 4.0
technologies by investigating (1) what motivates companies to consider using I4 technologies and (2) what
enables (or hinders) the intention to use I4 technologies to translate into their actual use.
Design/methodology/approach – The study uses survey data collected from a sample of export-oriented
manufacturing companies with more than 10 employees. Final analysis is conducted on 124 companies.
Findings – The results show that companies are proactively approaching I4. Only efficiency motives and
expected competitive advantage have a positive effect on the intention to use I4 technologies, which in turn
positively influences their actual use. The external, legitimacy-based, motives do not play a significant role in
explaining the intention to use. With respect to I4 technology enablers, employee competency positively
moderates and availability of finance negatively moderates the relationship between intention to use and
actual use.
Research limitations/implications – The work extends the existing knowledge base on I4 technology
drivers in companies that are not major global trendsetters but are heavily embedded in the value chains of
companies from the most industrially developed economies. The study is limited to manufacturing companies
in a small European economy and should be retested in other contexts.
Practical implications – The study can help managers implement I4 technologies in their companies more
successfully.
Originality/value – We take a novel research approach by proposing a framework that clearly distinguishes
between motives and enablers for the use of I4 technologies.

Purpose – To identify the Transcendental Essence of Humanity, the purpose of this paper is to describe in
brief what kind of research became possible when the theory of, e.g. autopoiesis, Husserl’s Transcendental
Consciousness and the theory of Rhodes and Thame came together to form a “transcendental”
interview methodology.
Design/methodology/approach – Critical conceptual implications are drawn to form a new research
method to explore a de-subjectified inner domain and to search for a possible common essence of humanity.
Findings – A Transcendental Emotional Reference was found practically alien to contemporary
perspectives. Still, the reference governs the emotional structure of human experience. This different
perspective answers basic questions of morality, organization theory and leadership.
Research limitations/implications – The findings of the new research open a new and transparent
perspective answering Grey’s question: “What is it to be human?” (Grey, p. 47, 2014.) A perspective shedding
new light on the humanities. A research limitation is the number of respondents. Still, being transcendental
the findings are theoretically valid for all.
Originality/value – The paper is based on a unique research enabling 32+ (ongoing research) respondents
to explore their own and universally shared Transcendental domain.

Abstract
Purpose – This case study aims to shed light on what went wrong with the introduction of new surgical suture
in a Dutch hospital operating theatre following a tender. Transition to working with new surgical suture was
organized in accordance with legal and contractual provisions, and basic principles of change management
were applied, but resistance from surgeons led to cancellation of supplies of the new suture.
Design/methodology/approach – Researchers had access to all documents relevant to the tendering
procedure and crucial correspondence between stakeholders. Seventeen in-depth, 1 h interviews were
conducted with key informants who were targeted through maximum variation sampling. Patients were not
interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed by discourse analysis.Atrial session and
workshop were participatively observed. A cultural psychological perspective was adopted to gain an
understanding of why certain practices appear to be resistant to change.
Findings – For the cardiothoracic surgeons, suture was more than just stitching material. Suture as a tactile
element in their day-to-day work environment is embedded within a social arrangement that ties elements of
professional accountability, risk avoidance and direct patient care together in a way that makes sense and feels
secure. This arrangement is not to be fumbled with by outsiders.
Practical implications – By understanding the practical and emotional stakes that medical professionals
have in their work, lessons can be learned to prevent failure of future change initiatives.
Originality/value – The cultural psychological perspective adopted in this study has never been applied to
understanding failed change in a hospital setting.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the relationship between job burnout (JB),
organisational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) and counterproductive workplace behaviours (CWBs). The job
demands-resources theory was applied to test the moderating role of perceived organisational support (POS) in
the relationship shared by JB, OCBs and CWBs.
Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted anonymously on a group of 253 telephone
customer support services employees from companies operating in Poland. Moderation analyses for statistical
verification were conducted with macro PROCESS version 3.3.
Findings – The research confirmed a significant statistical relationship between JB and all the studied
variables: POS, OCBs and CWBs. It may be concluded that JB increases the probability of CWBs and decreases
employee readiness for OCBs.When employees experienced POS, a reduction in tendency for counterproductive
behaviours was observed, while citizenship behaviours remained unchanged. Thus, it might be concluded that
POS levels off the intensity of the influence of JB on employees’ organisational behaviours.
Practical implications – Individuals who lack enough social resources to perform their job tasks limit their
citizenship activity in the workplace within their behavioural strategy (helping, initiative, etc.). In order to
protect their resources, they may also display strategies that are destructive for their organisational
environment, e.g. incivility or production deviance. In the situations when the organisation and superiors
provide employees with support and demonstrate concern for providing comfortable working conditions, such
persons, even in the case of perceived emotional exhaustion, maintain a high level of job activity.
Originality/value – The combination of variables presented in the research model explains the significance of
the chosen determinants of behaviours that are key from the perspective of the organisation’s effectiveness and
market competitiveness. This research extends knowledge pertaining to the relationship between JB and
organisational behaviours.
